The first 6-week series of watercolor classes has begun. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings. The second 6-week series begins October 30 (Tuesday) and ends Dec 13 (Thursday). Please call the school to see if any openings are available at this time for the second series. If not, put yourself on the Waiting List.
The classes are for Intermediate and Advanced students. In each class there will be a lesson followed by a demonstration. The following week, the class begins with a critique of paintings from the previous lesson. The newest innovation is that I do a demonstration that is projected on a large, HDTV screen so everyone can see what I am doing. Hooray to the school for creating this advantage for all.
Sonja's 10th tour with French Escapade will take you to the French Alps. Imagine opening your hotel drapes to see Mont Blanc welcoming you to a week in beautiful France. Each day we will be visiting and painting in a different location, among which will be Chamonix, Annecy, and Chanaz, where we will watch walnut oil being made on an old "grist" mill run by a waterwheel outside the small stone building. We'll go to an open market to see how the locals shop and try their food and wines.
You will be picked up (and dropped off at the end of the 8 days) at a designated destination in Geneva, Switzerland. Included are your accommodations, most meals, entrances to sites, air conditioned van, transfers, interpreter, and your watercolor lessons. Not included are airfare, gratuities, and personal expenses.

I will be doing a demonstration to help celebrate the 23rd Anniversary of Auburn Old Town Gallery, 218 Washington Street, (Old Town) Auburn. The theme is “Abstractions” so I will be painting abstractions. This date also begins an annual sale (20% off everything in the gallery) that runs through Sept 30. The series of 5 lessons will be on painting different types of water, beginning with reflective and ending with moving water. A demonstration in each class will explain and show you the sequence of doing this sort of painting. Your homework will be to paint something that exemplifies the lesson; a group critique follows the next week. A new lesson will commence after critique, etc. Since classroom space is very limited, painting will be done at home. When payment is received, it will be confirmed by email.

Join Sonja in this NEW art program sponsored by the Yosemite Conservancy. Sonja will take non-beginner watercolor painters to a different location in the Yosemite Valley to paint the late springtime. You will be shown the many techniques she uses and can follow along with her daily demonstration. As you paint, she will help you find shortcuts to improve and finish your painting.
Times to be confirmed, but each day should begin at 9:30. Day one will be held at Happy Isles. The succeeding days schedule TBA at this time. The annual Mother's Day Studio Tour by North Auburn Artists will be two days, each from 10 AM - 5 PM. Prior the tour, please check the website for map and information about the artists. So if you want to see oceans, still life, food paintings, flower paintings, landscapes and more, come over and open those flat file drawers.

A second Preview Show of works by the North Auburn Artists Studio Tour artists (NAAST) will be from March 21 for 2 months at Baked & Brewed Cafe, 958 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA. Hours: 6:01 AM - 4:01 PM daily. Mostly 2D artists are represented. Look for a watercolor by Sonja.

There will be 2, 6 week sessions for both the Tuesday evening class and the Thursday morning class. You may register for one or both sessions at one time. If not, call the school to confirm your registration. If the class is filled by the time you register, call the school to be placed on the waiting list. Classes are at 3775 Richardson Drive across the street from the gym at Regional Park. There is plenty of on-street parking as well as in the lot in front of the school office. The classroom is directly behind a gazebo near the school office. Beginning dates are: February 6 (Tuesdays) and February 8 (Thursday mornings) - (No classes during Spring break - as listed in the catalogue.)
There will be a lesson, lecture and demonstration in each class. The second class will begin with a critique of homework from the previous week after which there will be a new lesson, lecture and demonstration and homework. (One painting per critique, please.)
A select group of North Auburn Artists Studio Tour (NAAST) artists will be displaying their art at Tango Frozen Yogurt, 940 Lincoln Way, Auburn (@ Central Square). My painting that has been accepted to the KVIE (PBS) Art Auction. It can be viewed any time now online at KVIE.com/artauction. The actual auction date for my piece will be Saturday, October 7, in the 6:30 - 7 PM hour on TV channel 6 - PBS. Last year my painting was the first one to be auctioned right on the hour. This popular watercolor painting teacher will do an 8 day workshop June 9 - 16, 2017 for a small group of eager and excited people. We'll visit castles, gardens in the wine region of France. Home base is near Tours, France, in the Loire Valley. We will visit the last home of Leonardo di Vinci who was offered a castle by the (then) King of France if he would leave Italy and come to France. Here he invented, painted, and created many masterpieces; we will tour the museum and paint in the gardens plus sketch/paint in a different location every day. I am returning, for perhaps the last time, to volunteer-teach watercolor painting at Yosemite National Park. Each day, just before 10 AM, I will take people to a different location to paint; in inclement, cold or damp weather, we will meed indoors at the Art Center (near the Yosemite Village Store). You may register in advance or at the Art Center for as many days as you wish - from 1 - 6 days. Registration fee is $15.00 per day. Classes are from 10 AM - 2 PM, but I usually am back at the Art Center around 3:40 or 4 PM. The following week, I pack up my gear to teach in Yosemite, but I will have many original paintings in my studio that I have done on location in the past.
